How Do I Read a Fat Burner or Weight Loss Supplement Ingredient List?

Quick answer

Use five steps. Check the serving size, then whether every name has an amount, then convert any standardised rows, then check how live cultures are counted, then set one amount beside the research dose. The ExiTide panel is a handy practice sheet because it prints all eleven amounts.

Key facts
  • Serving size is one capsule and a bottle holds 30 servings, so every printed amount is also the daily amount.
  • Three rows convert: konjac fibre to about 45 mg glucomannan, turmeric to about 14 mg curcumin, resveratrol to about 2.4 mg.
  • Two rows give a ratio only: prickly pear 4:1 and cinnamon bark 10:1.
  • The two live cultures are counted in CFU, and the panel names species but no strain.
  • A panel is a specification. Only an assay on a lot is a measurement, and no laboratory report is published.

Why does reading the list matter more than reading the front?

The front of a bottle is advertising. The back is a record. Words such as advanced, clinical or burn tell you about the seller's mood. The Supplement Facts panel tells you what is inside.

That is why this guide starts at the back. It also uses one real panel from start to finish, so each step has a concrete example. You can then repeat the same steps on any other bottle in the shop.

Step one: what is the serving size?

Every amount on a panel is per serving. A serving is not always one capsule. Where a serving is three capsules, each capsule holds a third of the printed figures, and a bottle of 60 lasts only twenty days.

Check the servings per container against the capsule count. They match only when the serving is one capsule. On the ExiTide panel, the serving size is 1 capsule and the container holds 30 servings. Both numbers agree with a 30-capsule bottle, so every amount is a daily amount and there is nothing to divide.

Step two: does every name have its own amount?

A proprietary blend gives one total for several ingredients. If eight plants share one total, the smallest of them is only known to be somewhere under that figure. Nothing can be converted, and nothing can be compared.

ExiTide has no blend. Its eleven rows each print an amount, from riboflavin at 25 mg to the two live cultures at 1 billion CFU each. That alone puts the label ahead of many in its category, and the site says so while also listing what the label lacks.

Step three: can any row be converted?

Look for a percentage and a compound name. When both appear, the row turns into simple arithmetic.

The ExiTide rows, worked out
Row as printedKind of statementWhat it works out to
Konjac Extract Fiber 50 mg, Std. 90% GlucomannanStandardisedAbout 45 mg of glucomannan
Turmeric Extract 15 mg, Std. 95% CurcuminStandardisedAbout 14 mg of curcuminoids
Resveratrol Extract 12 mg, Std. 20%StandardisedAbout 2.4 mg of resveratrol
Prickly Pear Extract Powder 4:1, 100 mgRatio onlyStands behind roughly 400 mg of plant. What came out is not stated
Cinnamon Bark Extract 10:1, 100 mgRatio onlyStands behind roughly a gram of bark. No compound is named
Mangosteen Powder 100 mgWhole powder100 mg of dried fruit powder
Alpha Lipoic Acid 25 mg, Berberine HCL 15 mgSingle compounds25 mg and 15 mg, nothing to convert

A ratio describes how much raw plant went into the powder. It says nothing about which compounds survived. A gram of bark and an extract equal to a gram of bark are not the same thing, and a page that treats them alike has changed the subject.

Step four: how are live cultures and plants named?

Cultures are counted, not weighed, because a milligram figure would describe a powder and not a number of living organisms. A CFU is one organism able to multiply. The count that matters most is the one at the end of shelf life. Whether the ExiTide figure is measured there is not published.

Research on probiotics is strain-specific. The B. breve trial used a named strain at 20 billion CFU a day. The ExiTide panel prints the species, Bifidobacterium breve, but no strain code. So that trial cannot be borrowed for this capsule.

Plants have a similar gap. Cinnamon is sold under two different plants, and the chemistry differs between them. The ExiTide row says cinnamon bark extract and names no species. That is an open question for the seller, and no arithmetic will close it.

Step five: how does one amount compare with the research?

Pick the ingredient the product is sold on, not all eleven. Search for a randomised trial or systematic review, open the record, and read the dose and the duration together. Then divide.

For ExiTide's fibre, the NIH summarises trials at 1.24 to 3.99 g a day. The capsule gives about 45 mg. The ratio is between one twenty-eighth and one eighty-ninth. For berberine, NCCIH names more than 1 g a day for more than eight weeks where weight effects were seen. The capsule has 15 mg.

Occasionally the division goes the other way. Cinnamon is the example here, where 100 mg of a 10:1 extract sits inside the range of 120 mg to 6 g a day that the pooled trials covered.

What else is worth a glance on the label?

  • Other ingredients. ExiTide lists hypromellose, rice flour, silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate. Hypromellose is the plant-cellulose shell.
  • Percent Daily Value. Only riboflavin carries one, at 1,470%. The dagger beside the others means no Daily Value has been established.
  • Lot code and date. Lot EXI-26/GE-7602 and the best-before are stamped on the base.
  • Caution and use. One capsule daily, 15 to 30 minutes before a meal. Not for under 18, pregnant or nursing.

What can a panel never tell you?

Whether the bottle holds what the panel says. A panel is a specification. Only an assay on that lot is a measurement, and the certificate reference printed on the bottle is a label marking, not a published laboratory report.

Whether the product will work for you. No label has settled that. A label that hints it has is telling you about the seller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a supplement facts panel?

Check the serving size, then whether each ingredient has its own amount, then convert any standardised rows, check how live cultures are counted, and compare one amount with a research dose.

What is a proprietary blend?

A blend prints one total for several ingredients, so you cannot tell how much of each is inside. ExiTide has no blend; all eleven amounts are printed.

What does 10:1 mean on an extract?

It means ten parts of raw material were concentrated into one part of powder. 100 mg of a 10:1 bark extract stands behind roughly a gram of bark.

What does standardised to 90% glucomannan mean?

It means 90% of that row is the named compound. So 50 mg of konjac extract carries about 45 mg of glucomannan.

Why does ExiTide not name its probiotic strains?

The panel gives the species only. A strain code is what ties a culture to a particular trial, so no strain study can be attributed to this product.

Does the label prove what is in the bottle?

No. A panel is a specification. The lot and certificate reference are label markings, not a published laboratory report.

Our view

A label can be read in five minutes, and those five minutes are the best defence you have against hype. The steps are the same for every bottle, which is why they are worth learning once.

ExiTide does well on the first two steps and is honest about the gaps in the rest. It prints every amount, converts cleanly where it can, and leaves strain codes and cinnamon species unsaid. Judge it, and every other bottle, by that kind of plain scorecard.
